Theme: Balance the Scales: Empowering Fijian Women and Girls through Education 

Every girl deserves the same opportunities as boys to dream, learn and succeed. In Fiji, many girls are smart, determined and full of potential, yet barriers still exist that hold them back. Achieving balance means building a society where girls are valued, supported and empowered to reach their goals. By ending gender stereotypes, improving menstrual health resources, raising awareness about equality, supporting young mothers in education and encouraging girls to speak, Fiji can move toward a fairer and stronger future.

 

One important way to balance the scales is by ending stereotypes. Girls are often told that certain jobs or roles are meant only for boys. This limits their confidence and ambitions early on. Girls should be encouraged to pursue their careers whether they want to become doctors, engineers, athletes, pilots or even leaders. Families and schools should play an important role in motivating girls to believe in their abilities. When girls are given equal encouragement, they grow into confident individuals who contribute meaningfully to society.

 

Another important issue is menstrual health support. Lack of access to sanitary products or feel embarrassed discussing about menstruation which causes many girls to miss school, affecting their education and self-esteem. Schools should provide free sanitary supplies and teach menstrual health in a respectful and supportive way. Menstruation is natural and should never be a barrier to learning. Removing shame and offering practical support ensures girls can attend school regularly and feel confident.

 

Educating communities about gender equality is also necessary for a long-term change. True equality requires more than schools, it must be embraced by families, communities and leaders. Parents should encourage both sons and daughters equally and communities must recognize the importance of girls’ independence and education. When society values girls as much as boys, harmful stereotypes end. Promoting respect and fairness creates an environment where girls can grow well.

 

In addition, young mothers should be supported in continuing their education. Girls who become young mothers often face judgement or are forced out of school, limiting their future opportunities. Every young mother deserves the chance to continue her education without stigma. Schools and communities should provide pathways for them to return to learning. Education empowers them to build better lives for themselves and their children.

 

Finally, girls should be empowered to speak up and share their ideas confidently. Many girls remain silent out of fear of being dismissed and judged. Schools should create spaces for girls to take leadership roles, join debates and participate in decision making. Encouraging girls to express themselves helps them grow into strong leaders and role models. Every voice matters and girls should feel confident that their ideas can spark positive change.

 

In conclusion, balancing the scales for girls in Fiji means giving every girl equal opportunity, support and respect. By ending gender stereotypes, improving menstrual health, educating communities, supporting young mothers and empowering girls to speak up, Fiji can build a fairer society.
